Decolonizing
Arabic type
This study paves an opening for type designers of Non-Latin scripts to decolonize their views in approaching the process of type design. The term 'colonization' is not only imposed on physical matters but on methodologies as well.
According to Thomas Milo, western-influenced designers have been
trying to standardise a way for Arabic script to appear universal when
based with Latin, the script is being forced into grids and cells that does
not accomodate to the language’s diacritics (Milo 245).
The pressure of forcing them into universalising have become more
apparent within the digital space, when it all started with the idea of a
universalised encoding system called Unicode.
Milo mentioned that these designers should universalise their
design process rather than universalising the script instead. He has
categorised the designers’ approaches into 4 different methodologies:
